What Every Dancer Needs to Know about Nutrition: 3 Key Tips

As a dancer, your body is your most important tool. Proper nutrition is key to keeping it at its best. The right fuel will make all the difference, so here are three simple tips to keep you performing at your best.

Fuel up for long days.

Long days of dancing need a steady energy supply.  And that means eating the right balance of nutrients.

  • Carbs for energy - whole grains, sweet potatoes or quinoa
  • Protein for strength and muscle recovery - chicken, fish, tofu or beans
  • Healthy fats for endurance and joint support - avocado, nuts and seeds.

Stay Hydrated.

Staying hydrated is a simple but crucial step. Dehydration can affect your energy, focus and muscles.

  • Sip water throughout the day - keep a bottle nearby
  • Use electrolytes after intense exercise - try coconut water or a banana
  • Cut back on coffee and fizzy drinks

Think about pre and post dance meals.

The meals you eat before and after exercise make a big impact on your energy and recovery.

  • Before - try a small snack with carbs and a little protein, 1-2 hours before class
  • After - Refuel with protein and carbs within the hour after class

Take care of your body by focusing on fuel, hydration and recovery. This will lead to stronger performances and faster recovery. What are your favourite snacks to boost your energy?
